“The situation that we’re living in right now,” the artist Doug Aitken said in 2018, “the engineers are developing technology faster than the dialogue of philosophy and ethics [can address] them.” That’s a good place to start when thinking about Aitken’s precise, puzzling, completely absorbing installations and films, unmoored events in which time and space seem out of sync, a new reality inventing itself before us.
