Dora Maar is best known for her role as Picasso’s muse. The two met in 1935 when she was taking photos on the set of Jean Renoir’s film The Crime of Monsieur Lange, and broke up in 1943, though the affair didn’t end in earnest until three years later. Claiming physical and emotional abuse at the hand of Picasso, Maar suffered a mental breakdown. She moved to Ménerbes, Vaucluse, where she began to paint in an abstract style. Alone in the countryside, battling depression, she created landscapes in which wind and clouds were like ghosts of lives past. Maar died in Paris in 1997, at age 89, and posthumous attention revolved around her collection of art while her own works were mostly ignored. This exhibition presents a trove of drawings, paintings on paper, and texts that explore the enigmatic artist’s life. —Elena Clavarino
