The architecturally inclined choreographer Radouan Mriziga shares the American minimalist obsession with repetitive pattern but not the high modernist stripping of cultural signs. Indeed, the Maghreb pervades the Brussels-based Moroccan’s designs. In this respect, he is on trend: if anything marks contemporary work coming out of Europe today, it’s the intriguing mashup of a very Western, insouciant pedestrianism with the folk expressions of the once-colonized. Magec/The Desert, the second part of a trilogy that also sojourns in mountain and sea, is loosely inspired by “the practices of desert peoples” who, the Festival site hopefully notes, live by “a harmony that escapes all forms of domination.” —Apollinaire Scherr
