When he was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1986, the filmmaker Derek Jarman described his art as “my secret garden … an escape.” At Prospect Cottage, his small black-and-yellow fisherman’s shack in Dungeness, Jarman moved from the metaphorical to the literal, creating a garden that appears to float free of boundaries. In this exhibition at the Garden Museum, London, Jarman’s paintings and sculpture are on display alongside personal artifacts borrowed from his cottage. Jarman, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1986 and died in 1994, vowed that in the time he had left he would “get as much out of life as possible.” The cottage, the garden, the art were all part of his will to joy. —E.C.
