“To me,” David Hockney has said, “the world’s rather beautiful if you look at it—especially nature.” And especially nature in Normandy, where the artist kept a studio and spent long, quiet months during the pandemic lockdowns. Inspired by the monumental Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Hockney decided to create his own 90-meter rendition. The subject is not grand conquests but the changing seasons. The frieze is on view at Serpentine Gallery, along with new paintings created especially for the occasion. —Elena Clavarino
