David Byrne is best known for songwriting, singing, and playing the guitar—first in the band Talking Heads, then on his own—but since his early 20s he’s been using his free time to develop his drawing. In 2020, during lockdown, Pace hosted an online exhibition of Byrne’s work. Now Pace is showing Bryne’s drawings—his “dingbats” series, which he made in response to the boredom and anxiety of the pandemic—in its New York gallery. The first definition of dingbat means “stupid,” but Byrne is referring to its second definition, “a typographical device.” Think of those small drawings in magazines, used to break up blocks of type. In addition to the “dingbats” series, the gallery displays tree drawings and chair drawings Byrne made in the mid-aughts. —Jensen Davis
