New York artist Dan Herschlein creates plaster reliefs and installations that resemble stills from a horror movie. All are domestic scenes—a snapshot of a moment, often located in a house—and in all there are body parts that are misshapen or missing. A shrouded figure pushes wrinkled fingers through the slight opening of a window. A man crouches by a closed door, holding a belt. As menacing as the works may appear, none are gory or outright frightening. Just as an unidentified creaking noise can keep one up at night, it is the viewer’s imagination that completes the story and provides the fear. As Herschlein himself cautions, “this is a regular haunting and we are the ghosts.” —E.C.
