The “linocut” takes its name from good old linoleum. The German Expressionists were the first to cut linoleum into “tiles” for printmaking and the Russian Constructivists soon followed. In the 1930s Claude Flight, a British artist, made the linocut print a medium with a common-man message, teaching students at the famous Grosvenor School of Modern Art how to catch the energy of the era. Here are their masterworks. —L.J.
