Come from Away

From July 22 / Phoenix Theatre / London

The unlikely story of a small Canadian town’s humanity following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center was practically begging to be brought to the stage, and in February of 2017 it got there. Directed by Christopher Ashley and based on real-life Gander (population: 9,300)—a town that took in nearly 7,000 airline passengers who’d been re-routed in the hours following 9/11—Come from Away was an overnight sensation and won Ashley a Tony. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the attacks, the play is rising from the ashes post-coronavirus hiatus at London’s Phoenix Theatre. It will be on Broadway this fall. —J.V.
