Close Up

Sept 19, 2021 – Jan 2, 2022
Baselstrasse 101, 4125 Basel, Switzerland

The exhibition begins around 1870 with Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt in France, female artists who find a place in the art world. There’s also Paula Modersohn Becker and Lotte Laserstein, who make their way up during the chaotic Weimar years. Frida Kahlo and Alice Neel break new ground in Mexico and New York. They are followed by Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dumas, and Elizabeth Peyton. In “Close Up,” these nine queens of 19th- and 20th-century art are exhibited side by side, united by their singular depictions of the human figure. —E.C.
