Claire Tabouret was born in 1981, in Pertuis, a quaint town in the Côte d’Azur. As a child she pored over history and anthropology books; enrollment at the École des Beaux-Arts took her to Paris. Tabouret specializes in portraits of both individuals and groups. Depending on her mood, they can be theatrical or introspective, quiet or occasionally brash. Recently, Tabouret has become enthralled with Édouard Vuillard and his spiritual brotherhood, the Nabis (Arabic for “prophets”), who painted verdant landscapes and intimate interiors in the 19th century. Tabouret brings a 21st-century touch to Nabi ideals. Included in this exhibition is a tapestry woven in silk and wool by the rugmaker Odabashian, its design based on Tabouret’s 2021 work Passages d’intérieurs—a nod to Vuillard’s First Fruits (1899). —Elena Clavarino
