Jordan Watson created the Instagram account Love Watts (@love.watts) in 2011, publicizing art he enjoyed and thought others should encounter. Love Watts has since turned into a full-blown media company with two-million followers, and Watson, its creator, is now receiving his first solo exhibition for his own art. Inspired by his Black heritage and culture, Afrofuturism, and the street art in his native Jamaica, Queens, Watson’s series depicts Black men and women in historically white-dominated activities such as skiing and motorsports. The exhibition’s title is a tribute to the science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler. He notes that just as her prose “can shift from quiet, reflective scenes to vivid, evocative moments, my paintings oscillate between simplicity and bursts of expressive imagery.” —Lucy Horowitz
