Though hardly the most inventive big band on the scene, bassist McBride’s aggregation, which varies its slick mainstream sound with funk and Bossa beats, Big Easy swagger, Mingusy testifying, and rare hints of Sauter-Finegan silliness, is inarguably big fun. Here, though, the tone should turn elegiac as McBride unveils a work, commissioned by the festival, in tribute to the late trumpeter Roy Hargrove. —E.E.
