In its inaugural solo exhibition on the pioneering Carolee Schneemann (1939–2019)—the first time the artist’s work has been exhibited in Los Angeles—Lisson Gallery presents multi-disciplinary pieces from the 1980s. The show’s centerpiece, Video Rocks (1987), consists of 180 sculptural discs and five synchronized video monitors, immersing viewers in a dreamscape inspired by Monet’s water lilies. The exhibition also features works from Schneemann’s “Lebanon Series,” including tactile collaged paintings and the Dust Paintings, which demonstrate her innovative fusion of materials. Despite her play in multiple mediums, Schneemann always begged us to remember: “I’m a painter. I’m still a painter and I will die a painter. Everything that I have developed has to do with extending visual principles off the canvas.” —Carolina de Armas
