In recent seasons, collectors have been falling hard for the beautifully produced live recordings from the study center Palazzetto Bru Zane, which operates out of a specially renovated 17th-century Venetian palazzo. The discography lists such rarities as Massenet’s Ariane, Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable, and Luigi Cherubini’s Moorish extravaganza Les Abencérages. Another specialty: forgotten original versions of operas we know well in their revised form, like Gounod’s Faust. As its latest project, Bru Zane presents Bizet’s Carmen as seen at its scandalous 1875 premiere at the Opéra Comique. Antoine Fontaine is in charge of recreating the sets, with Christian Lacroix (yes, that Christian Lacroix) on point for the costumes. The Omani-born Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny sings the irresistible gypsy from the cigar factory. The tenor Thomas Atkins, a New Zealander, appears as the brigadier who can’t let her go, with the French bass Nicolas Courjal as his bullfighting rival. The London-born Ben Glassberg conducts. —Matthew Gurewitsch
