Before Carla Fernández started her eponymous fashion label in 2000, she was a visual artist. Born in Saltillo, Coahuila, Fernández grew up with traditional Mexican textiles and patterns, and has traveled through her native country to visit artisans who still use the old techniques—hand looming, mud dyeing. “All of our work is about collaborations and how to transform tradition into contemporary art,” Fernandez says. She employs more than 175 weavers, embroiderers, and woodcarvers from all over Mexico to make dangling skeleton earrings, wooden bangles, and ponchos with leather fretwork. This career-spanning exhibition of her work includes clothing patterns, illustrations, textiles, and many garments. —Jensen Davis
