In 1822, the first photograph in history was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Though to audiences worldwide the invention seemed wondrous, no one could have imagined the impact it would have on art. The Impressionists began focusing on fleeting snapshots of life—the “moment” caught in the act of escaping. Cubism, Surrealism and Dada took inspiration from the fragmented and multiple perspectives captured by a camera lens. Conceptual art and photorealism further blurred the line between the mediums. This exhibition brings iconic paintings and photographs—works by the likes of David Hockney, Pablo Picasso, Paula Rego, and Andy Warhol—into spirited conversation. —Elena Clavarino
