The 18th-century poet Robert Burns, Scotland’s unofficial national poet, was an impoverished tenant farmer who wrote verse on the side. By the end of his life—he died at just 37—Burns had pioneered the Romantic movement and penned beloved anthems still sung in Scotland today. Inspired by the man who wrote “O my Luve is like a red, red rose / That’s newly sprung in June,” actor Alan Cumming and choreographer Steven Hoggett have created a one-man show on Burns’s life and writing. Anna Meredith has written the music, and Cumming, naturally, stars. —Jensen Davis
