Bridget Riley: Learning to See

Bridget Riley, Streak 3, 1980.

Until May 4, 2026
Rendezvous, Margate CT9 1HG, United Kingdom

“I used to build up to sensation,” the British painter Bridget Riley has explained, “accumulating tension until it released a perceptual experience.” Riley creates energy with stripes, circles, triangles, and rhomboids—geometries that move like murmurations, form and color freed from the figurative. She calls the result “pure sight.” For this exhibition, Riley borrows a line from a letter Monet wrote to Eugène Boudin in 1892, in which Monet thanks Boudin for being the first to teach him “to see and understand.” —Elena Clavarino
