Marian Goodman is known for having brought the European avant-garde to the United States, from the 1970s onward. Where to begin? There were the Italians Francesco Clemente and Giovanni Anselmo, Brits like Richard Deacon and Steve McQueen, and Germany’s Anselm Kiefer, Blinky Palermo, and Gerhard Richter. Goodman’s energy was powerful to the end: she signed on the Colombian artist Delcy Morelos in 2023, and the wonderful Ana Mendieta two years after that. Four months since her death, Christie’s presents the gallerist as a mighty collector. Eight of the Richters that Goodman acquired over her four-decade friendship with the artist are now on sale, each capturing a distinct moment in Richter’s diverse and pioneering career. —Jeanne Malle
