The bohemian—la bohème—emerged in the mid–1800s in the Latin Quarter of Paris. It’s a term that evokes like-minded camaraderie, the idealization of art, and life on the fringes of polite society, which may also mean poverty and hunger. After W.W. II, the movement spread through countries around the world, claiming neighborhoods in New York, London, San Francisco, Zagreb, Tehran, Prague, and even Beijing. In this exhibition, works from the 1950s to the 2000s explore the rise and fall of bohemian cultures in fast-paced societies. Art by Alice Neel, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nan Goldin, and many others come together for the first time in the Czech Republic. —Elena Clavarino
