Bob Dylan: Rough and Rowdy Ways

Bob Dylan Tours Through 2024

In 1966, Bob Dylan concerts had an acoustic set, followed by an electric set. The division marked the first of many self-reinventions—this one from folk-singing activist to slick 60s rocker—and his new stratocaster guitar signaled betrayal. At one performance, between songs, someone yelled ”Judas.” Dylan turned his back on the crowd, and instructed his band to “Play it fucking loud.” Since that infamous night, he’s been a country singer, a Jewish spiritualist, a heartbreaker, and a broken-hearted ex-husband. He even recorded a Christmas album. And he never stopped touring—he didn’t when his audiences hated him, and he wouldn’t now if they stopped showing up. Only the coronavirus halted the flow. But now he’s back on the road. He’ll die onstage. See him before he does. —C.J.F.
