The earliest surviving animated feature, Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 film The Adventures of Prince Achmed uses jointed cardboard cutouts—reminiscent of Javanese shadow puppets—to cast a spell that all Pixar’s terabytes can’t match. In Bill Ware’s new score, the movie’s luminous tints and delicately scissored curves will be mirrored in an aural palette that includes Ware’s own vibraphone, as well as slide trumpet, violin, Middle Eastern percussion, and guembri—the camel-skin-clad bass lute played by the Gnawa of Morocco. —E.E.
