The Spectator calls it “phenomenally nail-biting.” Indiewire says that it “has to be seen to be believed.” Deadline concludes that it is “beyond incredible.” These reviews for Beyond Utopia, the newly released documentary, are spot-on. Directed by Madeleine Gavin, the film focuses largely on Seungeun Kim, a pastor who helps facilitate defections from North Korea—a risk he undertook two decades ago. Combining traditional cinematography with “found footage,” Gavin follows a North Korean family as they attempt the treacherous ordeal of escape, under Kim’s guidance. Other characters in Beyond Utopia include a defector who now devotes herself to criticizing the North Korean government, and a Seoul-based mother who was able to depart from the country but whose son was left behind. These stories are chilling. —Jack Sullivan
