“I don’t listen to a lot of new stuff. I just like the old stuff,” said the late singer Amy Winehouse, who took inspiration from legacy artists like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Her appreciation for the past didn’t stop at her music. From her signature pitch-black beehive updo and heavily winged eyeliner to the clothes she wore on the red carpet, Winehouse could seem like she was from another time (the tattoos covering much of her body reminded us she was of the present). A collection of her iconic outfits, displayed alongside never-before-seen handwritten lyrics and journal entries, comprise the first U.S. exhibition devoted to the British singer. Next year, many of these items will be sold at auction to benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which works to build emotional health in young people. —J.V.
