Raised in Paris by French parents, I learned to recognize Jane Birkin’s soft voice from a young age. I heard “Je t’aime moi non plus” often, perhaps prematurely. But I supposed that’s quite French. Only later did I discover the song is part of Je t’aime moi non plus, a film written, directed, and scored by Serge Gainsbourg in 1976. The story follows the lonely waitress Johnny (Jane Birkin), the garbage truck driver Krassky (Joe Dallesandro), and his lover Padovan (Huges Quester), who grows increasingly jealous of Johnny and Krassky’s relationship. Gainsbourg’s movie is one of five playing in “Being Birkin,” a series honoring the late actress and programmed by her daughters Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon. Jane B. for Agnes V.; Around a Small Mountain; Jane, By Charlotte; and Boxes are also in the series. —Jeanne Malle
