Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer reconstruct lost ballets. Their detective work is intricate, pulling from old photos, notebooks, coded notations, annotated scores, and the live memories of aging dancers. The result can be both thrilling and controversial (witness their reconstruction of Vaslav Nijinsky’s cataclysmic The Rite of Spring). Works & Process presents their reconstruction of George Balanchine’s first work to the music of Igor Stravinsky, The Song of the Nightingale (1925), which has its U.S. premiere on October 25 at Ballet West, in Salt Lake City. The Guggenheim program also includes a performance of Balanchine’s Apollo, the original version of 1928 (when it was called Apollon Musagète). Ballet West is dancing. This is special. —L.J.
