In Johann Sebastian Bach’s family, music was the only acceptable career. His first wife, Maria Barbara, was a composer; his second, Anna Magdalena, was a singer. Bach had 20 children, 10 of whom lived to adulthood. His oldest son, the brilliant composer Wilhelm, was oppressed by his father’s genius. The next oldest son, the less talented Carl, enjoyed widespread commercial success. In Nina Raine’s new play, Bach & Sons, family arguments about love, God, and music continue through the years. Simon Russell Beale stars as Johann Sebastian Bach. Nicholas Hytner directs. —E.C.
