The young American artist Avery Singer doesn’t shy away from technology. On large canvases, she renders underdrawings with 3D-modeling software, then paints over them using traditional techniques. An avid student of art history, her paintings teem with invocations of 19th-century painting and bohemian life as well as contemporary digital culture. Singer’s multivalent expression is full of contradictory energies—which feels very much like reality. Two new bodies of her work are on view. —E.C.
