Though Artie Shaw is considered one of the greatest clarinetists of the big-band era, his virtuosity is only an entry point into an absorbing life story. Born into a Jewish family in New York City, Shaw faced social isolation and anti-Semitism from an early age. He turned to music for comfort, and by the mid–1920s was performing in bands and orchestras. A decade later he was leading his own bands, and by 1938 he was working with Billie Holiday and Buddy Rich, among others. Though his career flourished, Shaw later shied away from the spotlight, turning instead to writing: he produced technical works on jazz as well as novels. For one week, Film Forum presents a new 4K restoration of Brigitte Berman’s Artie Shaw: Time is All You’ve Got. The documentary includes interviews with Shaw and with musicians who knew him, as well as archival footage. —Jack Sullivan
