Applebroog Birds!

Nov 12 – Dec 19, 2020
542 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

The artist Ida Applebroog, now 91, continues working with intensity and focus. In the last four years she’s been fascinated by ornithology and the art that has attended it, particularly the work of John James Audubon. Studying taxidermy, the specimen “skins” held in museum drawers, and the birds around her, Applebroog has developed her own ornithological lexicon—from rough plaster sculptures of skins to painted portraits of birds. Her series “Angry Birds of America,” a nod to Audubon’s masterpiece “The Birds of America,” addresses the destructive politics of the Trump administration through avian poetics. This exhibition expands upon that series. —L.J.
