“When I say I want to photograph someone,” Annie Leibovitz explains, “what it really means is that I’d like to know them.” Leibovitz has gotten to know a great many people since she joined Rolling Stone in the early 1970s. After stints documenting rock royalty on tour—artists such as Mick Jagger, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono—she photographed their eclectic friends. Then came Vanity Fair and her covers for the magazine’s revered Hollywood Issues, as well as her shoots for Vogue. Years ago, Leibovitz visited Bentonville to photograph Alice Walton, one of the museum’s patrons. Now dozens of her portraits are traveling South. Queens, presidents, artists, and musicians are her starry subjects. —Elena Clavarino
