Ann Hamilton studied textile design as an undergraduate, first at St. Lawrence University, from 1974 to 1976, and then at the University of Kansas, where she graduated in 1979. While honing those skills, however, she fell in love with sculpture, classically a male-dominated discipline. “[I was] interested in the relationships between things in space,” she said. “And more important than the things themselves in the way they come into relation.” In recent years, Hamilton has become interested in photography. In this exhibition she’s used handheld scanners to animate small sculptures from the Cleveland collection. In another gallery she uses video to involve visitors in questions about space. —Elena Clavarino
