Angel Otero: The Fortune of Having Been There

Jan 28 – Mar 27, 2021
501 W 24th Street New York, NY 10011

The Puerto Rican artist Angel Otero is best known for his collaged abstractions, but in this new series of works he has chosen to delve into his past and to do it pictorially. On black canvas, Otero paints the objects from his grandmother’s home in Puerto Rico—house plants, bird cages, couches, beds. The images are foregrounded against swirls of vibrant oil paint. Georges Braque, Pierre Bonnard, and Joan Mitchell are just a few of the influences that come to mind. —E.C.
