During W.W. II, the Nazis called their bunker construction project “Fortress Europe.” The large and impenetrable concrete structures were scattered across Europe, under cities in Italy and Austria, dotting the Atlantic coast from Norway to the Spanish border. Over the last few years, the German artist Andreas Mühe has traveled from one bunker to another, using the ominous structures as points of departure for his eerie installations—”fabric bunkers”— which recast the monuments into small soft boxes that resemble stuffed animals. At Kunsthaus Dahlem, Mühe’s “sea of bunkers” takes over the gallery space and asks, Is anyone protected from the destructive technology of today’s weaponry? —Elena Clavarino
