Anatomy of Lies

Sandra Oh, Ellen Pompeo, and Katherine Heigl in Grey’s Anatomy.

In 2014, Elisabeth Finch got the job of her dreams. An executive at Shondaland, the production company created by Shonda Rhimes, had read her moving account of battling Chondrosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, and connected her with the showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, then in its 10th season. Finch, who had previously written for True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, became a writer and co-producer, drawing from her cancer journey and past traumas, including childhood abuse, to create plot points. At a mental health facility, Finch met Jennifer Beyer, a mother of five and a victim of domestic violence. The couple married in 2020, but soon became estranged. In February of 2022, Beyer sent Rhimes an email alleging that Finch had fabricated parts of her identity. A subsequent Vanity Fair article by Evgenia Peretz revealed that Finch had lied about her multiple traumas. Anatomy of Lies, a new miniseries by Peretz and her husband David Schisgall, tells the full story. —Jeanne Malle
