“It’s important that it’s the right weirdness, the right dis forming,” says the artist Amie Dicke. “In a way, I see myself as a parasite. In this constant urge of trying to eat away into the image and understand the image.” Born in Rotterdam in 1978, Dicke is an ex-model who now strips back the glossy photos in fashion magazines and lets the subjects escape. Seeking to deconstruct femininity and the female gaze, she arms herself with sandpaper, scalpels, lipstick, and foundation, and systematically reconfigures female forms to explore what is left in a person when the focal points are removed. This exhibition, Dicke’s first New York presentation in almost 20 years, also features an installation called “Closed Eyes,” a formation of select books and newspapers over which a thin layer of sugar has been dusted. —Nyla Gilstrap
