In the 1970s, the German photographer Helmut Newton worked for many American magazines, shooting fashion photographs and nudes in New York, Las Vegas, and Miami. In the 1980s, he and his wife, June, moved to Los Angeles every winter, staying in a room at the Chateau Marmont. At the famed hotel and in the Hollywood Hills, Newton shot portraits of passersby and of acquaintances both famous and infamous. While he navigated the East and West coasts, fellow photographers Joel Meyerowitz, Sheila Metzner, and Evelyn Hofer were at work. This exhibition puts the four photographers side by side, shedding light on American life during the years of rock music and disco. —E.C.
