The multidisciplinary artist Amanda Ba spent the first five years of her life in Hefei, China, before coming to the United States with her parents. She now works to reconcile “China’s fantasy of the world. The World’s fantasy of China.” Ba returned to her hometown, where she found that new real estate development seemed at odds with Hefei’s traditional daily life. In paintings and video footage, mediums both ancient and modern, Ba explores the juxtaposition. In one series of paintings, she places imagined goddesses in construction sites. In another, she fuses 16 unique canvases into a single billboard with pop art on the front and Dazibao calligraphy on the back. It’s an exhibition about competing fantasies. —Lucy Horowitz
