In 1988, Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party pushed through Section 28, a series of laws that banned the “promotion of homosexuality.” Jill Knight (MP), the politician who introduced it, publicly stated that “the major point of it was to protect children in schools from having homosexuality thrust upon them.” Although LGBTQ+ activists fought against the legislation, Section 28 remained in effect until 2000. The musical After the Act looks at the consequences of Section 28 through the eyes of gay Brits who lived through it. Written by Ellice Stevens (who stars in the show) and Billy Barrett (who directs), the story is set to 1980s club music. —Jensen Davis
