When James Turrell, a pioneer of California’s Light and Space movement, first met Ad Reinhardt (1913–1967) at a lecture at the Pasadena Museum, he was mesmerized. “I think part of the investigation of perception I was involved in came through Reinhardt,” Turrell has said. “I don’t know what his personal message was, or how he did all that he did, but the work was quite remarkable.” Reinhardt, a forefather of Minimalism and Conceptualism, at first painted large canvases filled with geometric shapes, then moved inexorably toward the monochromatic “red,” “blue,” and “black” paintings. Turrell manipulates light and color in space. The sensation of their art is similar. This exhibition sees Turrell curating the work of a man who inspired him. A specially designed lighting concept will illuminate the canvases. —Elena Clavarino
