When Audra McDonald took home the Tony for her performance in the 2014 play Lady Day, at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, she made history. With that award, McDonald not only became the first person to win in all four acting categories —from leading ladies in musicals to featured characters in plays—but also broke the record for Tony wins in acting. It was her sixth victory. On December 9, the undisputed queen of Broadway debuted at the New York City Center, the solo star of its annual gala, streamed live that night. Now, through January 3, the gala is again available for streaming. Accompanied by pianist Andy Einhorn, McDonald sings classics from the Great American Songbook and the Great White Way’s golden age, a repertory that highlights her extraordinary vocal range and stage presence. Here is Broadway at its best. —C.J.F.
