When the childhood friends opened Outline on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn in 2022, the neighborhood was a fashion no-man’s-land. Barneys had shuttered. Bird, the fashion-seeking Brooklyn woman’s go-to for more than 20 years, had closed up shop. Austin and Rieke gut-renovated Outline’s sunny, backyard space and began stocking it with designers including Dries Van Noten, Wales Bonner, the Row, Lemaire, and Comme des Garçons. Austin, who grew up in Brooklyn Heights and worked at Totokaelo and Opening Ceremony, handles the buying. Rieke oversees the store’s interior design of custom and vintage furniture, which conjures a feeling of shopping at a friend’s home. Here, they share their must-haves.
