The brilliant young American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois attended the 1900 Paris Exposition with 363 photographs, separated into albums that honored African American achievement, community, and affluence in America. He also brought “data visualizations” that critiqued systemic racism. During the fair’s closing days, Du Bois won a gold medal for his role compiling these materials. At the Cooper Hewitt, the data visualizations from 122 years ago will again be exhibited. —Elena Clavarino
