It’s been replicated around the globe, that sculpture of four letters spelling LOVE. Its design is ingeniously simple: the letters, in serif type, form a square in which the L and tilted O rest atop the V and E. It is a work by the American sculptor Robert Indiana, who was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. By the mid 50s he was in New York City, living in Lower Manhattan just blocks from other young artists—Agnes Martin, Cy Twombly, and Ellsworth Kelly (his then lover). Indiana’s bold pop images became world renowned. He died in 2018. This exhibition presents sculpture, painting, and prints from his 60-year career. —Elena Clavarino
