Is there anything better than a diner? Maybe a drive Upstate. Some might say Phoenicia Diner, located on the side of a road, is the best of both worlds. Built in 1962 and moved up to the Catskills in the 1980s, it’s as classic—and wonderful—as it gets. The food is simple but delicious (we love the sausage and the pancakes), as is the coffee. Unlike in some diners, every table is a booth, so there’s not a bad seat in the house. They don’t take reservations, but a small room off to the right serves coffee and drinks while you wait. —Jeanne Malle
