Not many Polish fashion designers have achieved global recognition, but Magda Butrym has, thanks to her eponymous ready-to-wear brand. Her clothing, shoes, and accessories are crafted by artisans across the country in Pothole, Silesia, Nowy Targ, and Warsaw.

Butrym grew up in Silesia. When she turned 19, she moved to the capital to study fashion design, and after graduating, in 2008, she took a job as a stylist for a local brand. But she quickly sensed a gap in the womenswear market. “Quite early on, I got this feeling that there were all these amazing options for evening wear or special occasions,” she told Harper’s Bazaar, “while the everyday wardrobe felt quite monotonous and flat.” In 2014, she set out to change that.

Since starting her brand, she’s dressed everyone from Kendall Jenner to Jennifer Lopez. In 2018, she won the LVMH Prize. Now, as she opens a pop-up on New York’s Wooster Street, Butrym shares her favorite spots in Warsaw, where she lives and works.

An exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART in warsaw

I always find time to return to the Museum of Modern Art. Its exhibitions challenge how we see the world, offering a bold reflection of contemporary life. I’m constantly drawn to its raw energy and the dialogue it creates between art, identity, and society. It reminds me that true elegance doesn’t always come from perfection but the courage to express something new. (artmuseum.pl)
