Known for her experiments with Chinese ink painting, Yuan Jai, who was born in 1941, employs traditional techniques to create extremely detailed figurative works on silk. She received her doctorate in the West, where she was particularly interested in 20th-century movements such as Art Deco, Cubism, and Surrealism, and was then employed for more than three decades as a conservator at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, where she developed an intimate knowledge of Chinese art, decoration, and historical motifs. Yuan Jai’s bright landscapes, magically populated with beasts and birds, are luxuriously drawn in deep, vibrant colors. It’s a meticulous marriage of European and Asian art. —E.C.
