Although Pablo Picasso was a Spaniard through and through, Paris is implicit in his artistic evolution and identity. He was still a teenager when he first journeyed to the epicenter of modernism, in 1900, embarking on what would soon become one of the most protean careers in the history of art. The Guggenheim exhibition “Young Picasso in Paris” explores the influence the city had on the burgeoning genius. Featuring a select group of paintings and drawings, the show highlights Le Moulin de la Galette (1900), an innocent celebration of Parisian nightlife representative of Picasso’s early charm, which was soon overshadowed by his Blue Period. This glimpse into Picasso’s beginnings helps one to understand his progression—and that of 20th-century Europe as well. —Lucy Horowitz
