Yorgos Lanthimos is best known for his films—Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Mark Ruffalo, and Kinds of Kindness, also with Stone and Dafoe. But while on set for both movies, in Budapest and New Orleans respectively, the director turned to photography as a way to decompress. “It was, ‘Why don’t I see if, with my photography, I can find something here which is a different perspective from what is happening in the film?,’” Lanthimos told the Los Angeles Times. Hence, during Poor Things he took pictures of the film’s soundstage, channeling a Victorian sex fantasy, while in New Orleans he roamed the streets after hours, snapping stark black-and-white cityscapes. This exhibition, which follows up two photography books released last year, shows a director transitioning to still images. —Elena Clavarino
